DFC Services

Digital Forensics is the acquisition and analysis of digital evidence in a forensically sound manner. This includes preservation of original media, analysis of evidence and its context, and the proper treatment of digital evidence so that it stands up in court. The RI DFC offers digital forensics services to law enforcement, lawyers, and individuals. Our services are tailored to the needs of the customer, but include acquisition and analysis of digital media for civil and administrative cases, data recovery, expert testimony, and consulting. The RI DFC staff are trained professionals that use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to perform forensically sound investigations.

There are four steps to the forensic process: Consultation, Acquisition, Analysis, and Reporting.

  • During the consultation phase the client meets with the examiner to discuss what type of evidence is involved, what the client hopes to determine from that evidence, and any other case related issues.
  • During the acquisition phase trained professionals use specialized equipment to write protect the media, ensuring no changes are made to it, and then use forensic tools to get an exact bit by bit copy of the data. This copy, or image, is then used for analysis. This is the only step in the process in which the forensic examiner accesses the original media.
  • During analysis the examiner again uses special forensic tools to go through the data and find the evidence that they are looking for.
  • After the examination has been completed a report is generated to explain the findings, and then if necessary expert testimony is given.
